What we do
Japan rewards planning. Entry rules, rail-pass prices, tax-free shopping and visitor fees have all changed since 2023, and much of what is still circulating online is out of date. GoJapan pulls the current rules together in one place, in plain English, from the point of view of someone flying out of the UK.
The guides cover the questions most trips start with: what you need to enter, when to go, how to get around, what it costs, which route to take and where to spend your days.
How we check facts
- Official sources first. Entry and customs rules come from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Japan Customs, the Ministry of Health and the UK government's travel advice. Prices come from the operator that charges them.
- Every page lists its sources at the bottom, so you can check the original yourself.
- Every page shows when its facts were last checked. Anything announced but not yet in force is labelled as such.
- Prices are given in yen, the currency you will actually pay in. Pound figures are rounded conversions at the rate shown on the money page and will drift with the exchange rate.
Always confirm before you travel
Rules can change at short notice. For anything that could stop you boarding or entering — passports, visas, medicines — check the official source linked on the page in the weeks before departure.
Independence
GoJapan is not affiliated with the Japan National Tourism Organization, any rail company, airline or government body. We don't sell tours or tickets.
